Azelf is the being of willpower and is a Psychic type.
Using Dusk balls is recommended here aswell because of being in a cave, it is dark there.
A good defence to go against Azelf with is a Dark type pokemon to be unaffected by it's Confusion and Nasty Plot combo.
Gardenia's Gym is in Eterna City, the south part of it.
Gardenia uses grass type pokemon, so a fire type or flying type would be a good choice to use against her.
